Eco-design integrates the environmental impact of a product from the initial design concept, taking into consideration the whole lifecycle of the product.
Integrating environmental impact means producing goods with minimized environmental impact starting from the design process.
A product that is designed (or redesigned) with this approach fulfills the same qualities of use while providing benefits to the environment.
Extraction and processing
Manufacturing techniques
From where is it made to where it is sold
Place and method of sale
How it is used, cleaned, and maintained
Repair, recycling, destruction
Eco-design principles can be applied to various aspects of a product. These principles are designed to reduce the product's environmental impact. Following are a few examples:
Organic cotton is grown without the use of chemicals. Organic cultivation methods have been specifically designed to reduce the impact on the environment. It helps preserve biodiversity and soil fertility, and reduces the risk of polluting groundwater tables.
Coloring the textile requires lots of water and also releases sewage from the paint baths. In order to reduce environmental impact, we practice a textile dyeing method that incorporates dye pigments in fabric fibers when fabricating the yarn itself and not through traditional dyeing processes.
By recycling plastic bottles or textiles to produce our polyester, we reduce the use of petroleum-based resources while preserving the fabric's breathable qualities.
Our mission is to "sustainably make the pleasure and benefits of sports accessible to the many."
This is why at Decathlon, we have committed to conceiving our products with the eco-design approach. In the Philippines, around 400 eco-design products are available in our stores and online. This is only a small part of our global product catalog. That’s why, in line with the challenges of climate change and the depletion of natural resources, our team aims by 2021, to have 100% of new products to be eco-designed and by 2026? To have all products eco-designed!
We understand that there is still much work to be done in reducing the environmental impacts and at Decathlon, we are determined to continue to promote the necessity of sustainable change. If you would like to know more about our commitment, visit our group Sustainable development page:
